Working in a joint venture on some top business ideas often requires a lot of business development and face-to-face client liaison in order to “Sell” an idea.  Sales is fundamentally about conversations and building relationships. People do business with people, not brands or logos. When building a new relationship, it is therefore essential to remain completely congruent in all aspects of your business. If you do not have a specific capability or service, explain what you do to help your client achieve their desired result. But don’t lie.

In business, it is essential to be congruent in everything you do. In life, it is essential to be congruent in everything you do. It is a reflection of your integrity, your ethics and who you are as a person. Examples of congruency include:

  • A personal trainer who promotes exercies and healthy lifestyle, will practice what they preach and have a fridge constantly full or organic vegetables, rather than eat McDonalds and meat pies;
  • A health practiitoner treating a smoker leads a healthy life where they breathe fresh air and do not smoke cigarettes; and

  • A person selling an Apple Mac uses Apple products for all their personal requirements, and not a PC.

Some examples of incongruency include:

  • Telling a current client that all information they provide you with will be confidential and they are a valued customer, and then 30 minutes later telling a potential new client the details of that transaction in order to impress them and gain their business; and
  • Telling a potential client that you have built a service that can proivide them with X,Y and Z when you have only developed half of Y, and even that is still a work in progress. If they asked for your services on the spot you would be completely unable to provide any of it in the manner you have presented. There is nothing wrong with talking about how your business is growing and that over time you can develop a relationship that will benefit both parties.

Congruency means you are living to your personal truth in all aspects of life and business. Your personal actions and behaviours are in line with the message, services, information and products you deliver.  Incongruency means you say one thing and do another and can seriously challenge your credibility in business and in life.  Simple, just be congruent with all your top business ideas.
